Binge - HK$10 Sunday Brunch Deal

Here's a deal for the cheap and hungry (with gourmet inclinations for 100% New Zealand grass-fed beef). If you are in Lan Kwai Fong for Sunday brunch then get in queue at the Gourmet Burger Union there. Newly launched this is probably Hong Kong's best value offer - aUnbelievable HK$10 Sunday Sale on their  signature GBU Kick Ass Burger which basically is a good-sized BLT (regular price HK$48). OK so there is a catch to it (isn't there always?) - you have to be the first 100 customers to visit their store each Sunday. Opens at 12pm and offer valid till 3pm.

Gourmet Burger Union LKF is located at The Plaza, 19 Wing Wah Lane, Lan Kwai Fong. Tel: + 852 2147 2866

Breakaway - Marathon Stays and Rugby Sevens in Hong Kong

Even as I write, I know I have eaten too much and consumed waaay too many martinis and Champagne last night. CNY has this effect on you – obligatory binges that I am not complaining about, but which I will regret later when the fat sets in. I wish I had paid my dues earlier, and ran more, did more push ups, etc. I am still trying to bust my underarm hang. Sigh…but how to you go jogging while nursing a hangover?

I guess those who are planning to run the Hong Kong Marathon on 20 Feb have no such issues, fit as a fiddle and all ready to leap on the plane to fly there to run all 42.7 kilometres, if the smog doesn’t get to you first.

The Excelsior Hong Kong is offering a ‘Get Ready for the Marathon’ package between 18 and 28 February. For HK$1,600 per night, it gives you accommodation in a Superior Room, daily brekkie for two, complimentary InBody body composition analysis, HK$220 body treatment credit at the hotel’s fitness centre to relax and recuperate after the run, a training session at HK$400 per hour by the hotel’s personal trainers and 20% discount on F&B including room service. This deal requires a minimum two nights’ stay. It’s an old hotel, mind you, but it’s centrally located in Causeway Bay – lots of pre and post run shopping and eating – and if you get the larger rooms, you can get the great view of the harbour!

Still on Hong Kong, lots of people around the region potter over for the annual international Rugby Sevens each year. This time it falls on 24-28 March. Award winning boutique hotel The Fleming in Wanchai, is offering a special package from HK$2,280 a night to HK$3,680 for Executive rooms with fully-equipped kitchens, based on a three-night minimum stay.

Apart from smart digs, this gets you daily breakfast, complimentary cocktails every evening, 20% discount on room service and 50% discount on all drinks except wine at signature restaurant Cubix, where the 3-course set dinner is priced at just HK$150. There’s also complimentary broadband Internet access, local calls, and access to the California Fitness Centre located nearby. Why stay here? It’s a 5-10 minute taxi ride from the Hong Kong Stadium, and steps away from Lockhart Road where fans celebrate after games.

Binge - Fireworks and HK Lunar New Year Feasts

What’s being served on gourmet tables in Hong Kong during the Lunar New Year and how does it differ from what you see in Singapore? For one, the Chefs in Hong Kong are definitely ultra creative and have a penchant for exotic ingredients or lets just say dishes with a slight twist. Couple that with a breathtaking view of the fireworks over the Victoria harbour which most of the restaurants below have.. eating out here in Hong Kong will definitely mean that your year will get off to a crackling start..
What’s different, you ask? Well, how would you like to try a Lamb Lo Hei? The award-winning Hutong(28F, One Peking, 1 Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui T:+852 3428 8342) well known for its spicy Northern Chinese fare, has given this traditional dish a twist and you can try their Shangahinese style Lamb as the main ingredient tossed with fresh and dried seafood, diced cucumber and carrot drizzled with a sesame dressing. Serves 4 to 6 persons at HK$788. For the New Year from 4 Feb, also try their 11 course banquet that features signatures such as their Crispy de-boned lamb ribs served with Chinese pancakes, Scallops tossed with pomelo segments and a lovelyMandarin sorbet with crispy apple rolls for dessert.
Then there is Ostrich Meat with Chestnut, Goose Web in Oyster Sauce or Baked Crab Shell stuffed with Bird’s Nest and  you can savour these atKwan Cheuk Heen (+852 21212691) on the 5th floor of the Harbour Grand Hong Kong Hotel where an 8 course menu starts at HK$688 per person.

For Barbecued Suckling Pig, Baked Stuffed Crab shell, Fried Lobster with Black Bean and Chilli, Traditional Baked Chicken in Rock Salt and Braised Fresh Crabmeat Soup with Velvet Winter Melon, we recommend Guo Fu Lou (31st Floor at iSqaure, 64 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, T:+852 2487 3788). A feast for 12 here starts at HK$10,800 and comes complete with a special pairing of Champagne, a magnum of “Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 1998” Champagne, one of the most esteemed names in Champagne that has impressed even the toughest of critics.
If you like your Chinese cuisine with some Japanese inspiration stirred in, then maybe a main course of Hokkaido King Crab Leg with seaweed and Inaniwa Udon will be the thing served alongside Braised Conpoy with Turnip, Wok-seared Sun-dried Oyster, Double-boiled Superior Shark’s Fin Soup with Bamboo Piths and Fungus, Braised Whole Fresh Abalone and Garoupa Fillet with Oyster Jus, Wagyu Beef in Spicy Salt and Diced Shrimp served in a Golden Wheat Flour Basket. Steamed Chicken with Yunnan Ham and Morel Mushrooms and Sweetened Rice Dumplings in Walnut Cream and a Crispy Sesame Dumpling with Red Bean Paste for dessert . The pice tag? HK$1,588 per person at the Intercontinental Hong Kong Hotel’s Yan Toh Heen. There are also several other set menus available such as the “Fat Choy” menu  at HK$988 per person from 3 to 19 Feb and two Auspicious Spring Menus at HK$10,888 and HK$13,888 available from 1 to 28 February respectively.
The thing that I find in Hong Kong but hardly in Singapore are the sublime Puddings which I find rather hard to resist.  Head to T’ang Court at The Langham Hotel, Hong Kong(T:852 23751133 ext 2250) from now till 2 February where there are three delicious homemade puddings for 2011: the New Year Pudding, Turnip Pudding and Taro Puddingat HK$138 per box.
The Ming Court at Langham Place Hotel in Mongkok T: +852 3552 3300 also serves up Chinese New Year puddings with ingredients like pork, cheese and truffles. Try the stir-fried Golden pudding with diced wagyu beef in chocolate sauce at HK$288 and the baked Shanghainese pudding with pumpkin, cheese and black truffle at HK$168.
Learn to make your own Pudding? Yes you can! Master Chef Lau Yiu Fai and his team at Yan Toh Heen will show you how to make a Savoury Kagoshima Daikon Pudding and Peanut and Sesame Dumplings on Sunday, 30 January from 10.30am to 1pm at the Yan Toh Heen Private Dining Room at HK$688 per person. Take home gifts include a Savoury Kagoshima Daikon Pudding, traditional Peanut and Sesame Dumplings, Yan Toh Heen Homemade X.O. Chili Sauce and a Yan Toh Heen apron. Call the Hot Line at  Tel: +852 2313 2323
How about having bubbly with everything?
The Chefs at One Harbour Road (8/F Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, 1 Harbour Road, Hong Kong. T: +852 2584 7722) are serving up three premium Krug champagnes all through January including the Krug Grande Cuvee N.V, Krug Vintage 1998 and Krug Rose with a specially paired Chinese menu of Steamed Egg White with Crab Meat and Wolfberry Seeds, Simmered Fillet of Garoupa with Superior Fish Soup, Wok-fried King Prawns with Black Fungus, Stir-fried Diced Pigeon with Bamboo Shoots, Preserved Vegetables and Pine Nuts and Stewed Northern Rice with Baby Abalone in Stone Nest. Dessert is a Flambe of Pear with Red dates and Cointreau Butter served with Almond Sherbet at HK$900 per person.
If you are on the Kowloon end watching the Fireworks, then book a table at Loong Toh Yuen (The Hullet House, T: +852 3988 0107). They are serving a glass of champagne with their Fireworks 8 Course set dinner menu at HK$1,188 per person (on 4 Feb) that  includes Steamed Fresh Garoupa with Chinese Wine “Fa Dew”, Braised Whole Abalone and Duck Feet with seasonal vegetables, Crispy Chicken with Black Truffle, to name a few.  Seasonal and Lunar New Year specialties are available from 1 to 28 February.

By The Way - One-Of-A-Kind Stores in Hong Kong!

Here's the real deal on Retail Therapy and interesting (read 'quirky') Retail formats in Hong Kong.

BACKSEAT SHOPPING - We hopped into a cab last week in Hong Kong and the friendly driver (and Hong Kong Taxi Drivers are rarely friendly) tried to sell us these. I guess, like the rest of space starved Hong Kong, he was fully maximising whatever selling space he had, even if it was behind his back (LOL). Can't blame the guy for trying!

BROLLY VENDING MACHINE- How about this one below - I wanted a drink at the MTR station in one of the Malls so I approached the vending machine and got an umbrella instead at HK$68.

BOX STORE - Then there was this one (below) - people who want to sell small stuff but have no space can rent a box space in someone's store on someone's shelf. How's that for sizing down on the psf rental.

Or this one - the STORE ON WHEELS. No longer just for ice cream, optometrists, bloodbanks and dental clinics... now the commercial folk, think Wedding Photography studios, Bridal gown shops and Skin care brands alike have been driving themselves to high traffic locations all about Hong Kong. Now that's what I call ... reaching the customer!

Binge - Concept Dining in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is really where the spirit of innovation thrives. You can always expect to be surprised when it comes to new ways of enjoying life and here are a few in the dining department that we discovered recently.
Smuggle an invitation into a stranger's home. Yes, you can do that by just checking your palette into Philia HOME, a new venue for private house and dinner parties. The 'house party" concept is not new but the idea of going to a strangers home for a meal where you don't quite know what to expect is intriguing especially when the venue is a chic upmarket home, with warm decorations, a spacious open kitchen, a comfortable and stylish lounge, elegant dining room with a spacious terrace, all in the mid-levels.
Opened and operated by Winnie Lam who is partnered by renowned local Chef Leo Kam who has worked in the Michelin star kitchens of some of the world's best culinary masters including Gordon Ramsay and Nobu Matsuhisa, the two present cuisine with a Japanese influence in a venue that can be hired for anything from  a  romantic dinner, birthday, anniversary celebration, DJ parties, to more corporate functions including brain-storming sessions that include  lunch meetings, or product launches.
The venue even hosts art exhibitions showcasing local talents monthly. Philia HOME  is at G/F, 5 U Lam Terrace, Central, Hong Kong at +852 2147 2389 or see: www.philiahome.com

Ever eaten a slab of Argentinian steak and pray tell, what would the difference be between this and some of the good ol' US, Aussie and Japanese wagyu that your palette has become so accustomed to.

Find out at Tango, Argentinian Steak House at 77 Wyndham Street, Central serving prime cuts of beef over a traditional open fired oven matched by an impressive Argentinian wine list. Expect uncomplicated flavours, natural ingredients and of course, beef from La Pampa, the world’s most famous grazing pasture. Look out for the Parrilla fireplace where meats are grilled over aromatic wood flames. Order prime quality Argentinian rump, fillet, sirloin, rib eye, skirt or ribs are from grass fed sustainable beef, hand selected from a source ranch. Mains are complemented by quintessential Argentinian empanada, appetizers, salads and pastas, including a selection of zesty seafood ceviche and unashamedly self-indulgent desserts. Also on the menu are lamb, chicken and salmon options, plus vegetarian side dishes. The Chef Ignacio Elizondo trained under Daniel Boulud the Chef-Owner of a number of award-winning Michelin star restaurants in New York.
Drop by Podium 4 and 5 of the World Trade Centre in Causeway Bay and there is a new 15,000 sq foot dining destination that comprises the Hooray Bar and Restaurant, Teppanyaki Kaiko and Carousel Fine Cake and Pastries.

Hooray Bar and Restaurant at tel: +852 2895 0885 is all about the intricacies of Italian-Japanese fare. You can also enjoy Oysters from $20 each with wine and champagne or Japanese snacks from the six tailor-made cooking trolleys at the 180-seating outdoor terrace.
Teppanyaki Kaiko at tel: +852 2895 0855 follows the success of its flagship outlet, Teppanyaki Kaika, at The ONE, Tsimshatsui. This all-new eatery presents the truly authentic delicacies at affordable prices, targeting the vibrant younger diners. Over half of the 60-seating dining areas are overlooking Victoria Harbour which has provided a perfect backdrop for the chefs to showcase their cooking skills. The interior is decorated with the natural pine and the bamboo-like tile imported from Japan, oozing a sense of traditional “zen” atmosphere.

Binge - A Local Guide to Hong Kong Food and Dai Pai Dongs

Quite frankly when I want to check out a place to eat in Hong Kong, I go straight to Open Rice on my iPhone. But if you prefer a printed version that is handy in your bag then pick up the WOM Guide for Foodies. It joins the Michelin Guide and the Miele Guide in the local market which testifies to the fact that Hong Kong has obviously many good eats.

The 6th edition of the Hong Kong’s most loved and bestseller dining guide for 2011 offers honest, fun and witty reviews of the city’s most loved restaurants by over 15,000 Wommers who are Hong Kongers who log into www.WOMguide.com and share their dining experiences. A bit like Open Rice but in print, I guess.

What's worth having comes FREE with this year’s guide and it is a special booklet entitled Hong Kong’s REAL Dai Pai Dongs, affectionately produced by the WOM guide team in celebration of Hong Kong’s love affair with traditional food stalls. Highlighting the city’s real Dai Pai Dongs - the ones that have been issued with government licenses (or Dai Pai), the booklet includes ratings by the WOM guide team, signature dishes and an icon indicating if they have air-conditioning, as well as user friendly maps.

WOM guide 2011 for foodies is categorized into 27 WOM choice listings, each based on the most popular or hard to make dining occasions and food specialty – the criteria that Hong Kongers usually base their dining decisions on. It covers the city’s wide array of restaurants, from the most loved local eateries to the best fine dining establishments in town.

Check out 'Idol Status' restaurants which are restaurants with a tremendous following, "Hole in the Wall' restaurants with amazing food but not so amazing décor, 'Forever and ever' those that have been around forever and are not likely to close anytime soon, 'Big Group' places that cater to parties, 'Dim Sum, Moo!', 'Breakfast' and 'Brunch' and 'Out of Towners'. Over 250 restaurants are selected by the WOM guide team based on their popularity and reviews.

You can expect to find out if a restaurant is: good for business dining, a romantic dining location, serves large groups, pet friends, good for kids, has al fresco seating, takes food orders past 11pm, takes reservations, has valet parking, offers delivery and/or takeout, does not accept credit cards, and, very importantly, do they charge a corkage fee. Available at any leading bookshop in Hong Kong for HK$168.

Boudoir - Pack him off to the "MAN Academy!"

So here is a funny one from Hong Kong .. where male bonding a.k.a networking has taken a new twist. No more beer and pool boys nights out for the Martians amongst us, instead male bonding in Hong Kong comes in the form of the "MAN Academy" where according to organisers NecesCity.com, 25 guys eagerly attended Hong Kong's very first MAN Academy last Saturday, November 13th.

The half day event had the guys attend insightful, short seminars where experts from Circuit 25 and The Body Group gave tips about how to stay fit and eat healthy with a 14 hour work day before the Head Tailor behind Moustache discussed fashion styles and what to watch out for when tailoring a suit.

Sexpert Sara from Passionately Yours presented everything men ever wanted to know about pleasure and sex (I would love to know what she is holding in her hand ? ) and wine connoisseur Dean Aslin from Saveurs shared his knowledge about wine tasting and matching. Finally Gibson Chan from the host venue, Hush let the participants in on molecular cocktail mixing. And for their bravado, the 25 left with "MAN Academy" Certificates.

Organised by NecesCity.com , Hong Kong's first and only free daily email lifestyle tip for guys, the website looks for hidden gems, and wires subscribers to the city's pulse and everything hip by delivering a short yet meaty tip a day that distills the best of dining, nightlife, gadgets, services, fashion, leisure and travel.

In my SIMPLYFAB opinion, the next session for him should focus on housekeeping, babysitting, groceries, setting up a hot bubble bath, how to give a great massage and delightful foot rubs for me when I get back from an all-nighter of drinky poos with the girls -  now that would really make my day!

Binge - Spooky Eats for Halloween in Hong Kong

There is a difference between 'horrible' food and food that is dressed up to look 'horrible'. Here in Hong Kong, the restaurant's take Halloween pretty seriously and if you are looking for some devilish fun that extends from the costume department onto the palette, then don't miss out on these ghoulish meals.

We could not resist publishing the pictures! This one above is called MONSTER FINGERS (of grilled Biloela Australian Lamb Tenderloin with Mint Pesto and Mashed Potatoes) and you will find it served at BLACK STUMP at G/F, One Knutsford Terrace in Tsim Sha Tsui from 25 to 31 October, T: 2721 0202. The restaurant normally serves modern Australian cuisine but for the occasion, it will be transformed into a creepy dungeon of gloom!
If the above doesn't get you in the mood, then maybe the TARANTULA VENOM PIZZA (Seafood and Squid Ink Pizza with Salmon, Barramund, Scallops and Calamari topped with Fresh herbs) will do the  trick.

If you find yourself on the Hong Kong end, then head to breezy and lively Stanley where SAIGON AT STANLEY at 1/F, Murray House, T: 2899 0999 has some wickedly delicious grub and a special ‘Trick or Treat’ set just for kids at only HK$88 packed with tasty treats like Chicken Skewers with Spider Venom Peanut Sauce (2pcs) and Mummy Brains Fried Rice. Available from 25- 31 October.

If you are feeling adventurous you can have this meal of FRANKENSTEIN'S EYE BALLS , a delicious dinner combo of Crispy Soft Shell Crab and Rice Paper wrapped Foie Gras with Monster Eyeballs.

Also kid-friendly, ROCK SALT at 25 Stanley Market Road T: 2899 0818 also pulls out the stops to bring you a Howling Halloween Dinner Menu, available from 25-31 October at HK$258 per person.

Try the BLOOD AND GUTS FISH (Skate-wing served with mashed eye balls and the Chef's scary sauce).

If it's more about fast food then head to SHAKEY'S PIZZA where a 'Spooktacular Halloween Menu Set for 2 with devilishly delicious selection of dishes – all with freakishly fun names is available from 25-31 October 2010. Every diner gets Halloween themed transfer tattoos too!

Whilst you are there, try the Creepy ‘n’ Crispy Platter of Buffalo Chicken Wings, Prawn Tango and Shakey’s Famous Mojo served with Sour Cream and Ranch Dip. There is also the Hellish Hot Pizza of Texas Barbecue Chicken with Jalapeno and Mozzarella Cheese and a choice of Ghostly Pan-seared Shrimp and Scallop with Black Ink Pasta and Lobster Butter or Witch’s Pesto Pumpkin Risotto with Smoked Salmon.
Dessert is this BLACK DEATH Chocolate Mousse with Wicked Raspberry Coulis.

If you prefer to stay on high ground, the haunting continues at The Peak Tower where the BUBBA GUMP RESTAURANT has themed up with Madame Tussauds in an "Eerie, Eats and Treats' promo that includes an admission ticket and a 4R photo at Madame Tussauds. A special menu at HK$380 is served from 29 to 31 October at the restaurant. There is also a "Spooky Thrills and Spills" 2 way ticket aboard the Peak Tram at HK$418. Call: 2849 2867.
