This Weekend – Time To Stock Up on Your Wines

Our friends at Top Wines are rolling out their annual Christmas wine sale again this weekend, from 3 - 5 December at their quaint premises in Joo Chiat at 33 Tembeling Road. They promise up to 60% discounts and it’s always a fun and festive affair - which is why I have been going every year for the last six years at least! (See the picture at the top? That's what the sale will look like. Very civilised, no jostling, and lots of vino!) Don’t go expecting cheap wine at rock bottom prices though. These are generally good wines and now’s the opportunity to stock up on your wine fridge at a bargain!

There’ll be wine tastings of up to 10 tipples every day and things can get pretty crowded but fun. Good bottles to load up on are a range of sparkling reds of which they have a good range, Peng Wine (rather unusual and very delicious), Mount Riley, Doolhof (nice reds!), Elena Walch (yummy Gerwurz) and lots more. If you need help, look for Flora or Khim and say that SimplyFab sent you! They'll give you great advice and ideas on pairing your wines.  

There’ll also be tutored tasting sessions of wines from The Rolland Collection, throughout the three days, conducted by Mr Didier Richer, Regional Ambassador for The Rolland Collection. Each session lasts one and a half hours, and features five wines. Reservations are necessary for these sessions, which cost $20 per head.

This Weekend - Warehouse Sale to Help the Needy

If you’ve not a lot planned tomorrow, do a good deed and go the the "Every ONE Can” warehouse sale at 39 Keppel Road #01-02/04, Tanjong Pagar Distripark tomorrow, 16 October, from 10am to 6pm. This is organized by FoodXervices Inc Pte Ltd, a leading food distributor in Singapore, and ONE (SINGAPORE). Buy essential items like rice, noodles, tuna, bread, toilet paper, and proceeds will go to Evercare Welfare Centre (EWC), a volunteer welfare organisation that assists needy individuals and families in the Tiong Bahru area.

They hope to fill two whole trucks with food supplies.

This (Coming) Weekend – Wines, Weddings and Good Company

HALIA WEDDING SHOWCASE

I love weddings, so long as it’s not mine. Methinks the wedding couple is the most stressed people during the day, and the people who have the most fun are the guests….if they’re not made to wait an hour and a half for dinner to start at 9 pm, that is! For those who are tumbling headlong into this state of matrimony, you get some help from forward-thinking venues like Halia at the Botanic Gardens…

Now, what’s there not to like about garden weddings? So romantic and pretty. Well, to help you make up your mind, Halia is holding its Halia Wedding Showcase on Sunday 25 July, 5-8pm in two sittings. The event gives you an idea what you can do for a wedding there, and since it’ll be decked out in all its finery, it’ll let you see how gorgeous the restaurant and its event space can look like! That sounds real clever – so I queried the organizer to get details just for you….

This is what Juliana of Halia says: “During the Showcase, interested couples will have an opportunity to witness a full mock-up of a wedding plus sample a variety of food and drink at little cost to them. There are also additional perks of speaking to experts in the wedding business, as well as having one-on-one time with the Halia’s event planners.

On this day, Villa Halia will be decorated as a wedding venue, with floral arrangements, champagne tower, buffet set up, dessert mock-up and table configuration. As tickets are limited, couples have the privilege of exploring the Villa at leisure and without crowds. Our banquet team will be present to assist and our partners, specialists in the fields of photography and floral décor will also be on hand to provide advice to the couples.”

How clever! If I were in the market for this, I’d attend this too ‘cos I’ve been to Halia many times for brunch and it is one of the loveliest garden settings here. (We also share the same architect!)

So there was cold crab, cheese with truffle honey, crackers, popiah, etc….and all of us, strangers to each other at first, just whiled away the afternoon at the communal table with good conversation and good libation, of course. It was absolutely great and so untypical of Singaporeans. (So you see, wines do bring out the best in us!) So pop down next time they hold it – first and last Saturday of the month from 2pm – 5pm. You don’t have to bring food if you don’t want to – we’ll share ours!

This Weekend – Bak Chang with Bubbly this Saturday!

We like what the ladies at Top Wines are doing this month – they have just launched a bimonthly bubbly tasting event – and every gal loves her bubbles, right? This Weekend - Land Sakes! Sweet Angels of Charity!

Look what landed on our laps! The Angel of Charity?

Maaan…we wish! (Stop peeping up the loin cloth, darling! We KNOW you did!)

No, it’s pictures of the Manhunt contestants who pottered about Orchard Road last week, bare-chested and selling dinky little Ben & Jerry's ice cream for charity in the sweltering h-h-h-h-hot afternoon sun. So sweeeeet!

The ice cream they offered went for $5 a pop, but we hear many enthusiastic customers forked out twice the amount for the pleasure of buying from these hunky-duhnks. The deed was done to raise funds for the Boys Town new dorms, to replace the current grounds that have been around for the past 62 years. While the cream isn’t going to dent much of the $15 million target required, at least it gave a little eye candy to passers by that day. If you, like us, missed the action on Orchard Road that day, have a sweet peek of these young’uns. (You know what I learnt from these pictures? Always dress properly, cos you never know who you might bump into! No more baggy bermudas and muffin tops, please!)

And if you’re in Orchard Road this Saturday (5 June) and it’s not too much of a detour for the trusty old orthopedic shoes, the Manhunt Finals will be held at The Heeren from 4-6 pm. Twenty of these pretty boys will be posing (ewwww!) their way to titles like Mystique Most Promising Male Model, Corona Beer Most Sexiest Hunk (grammar situation here!), Ripcurl Surfer Dude Award (honestly, how many of these chaps can even stand on a surfboard at sea????) and the grand title of Manhunt Singapore 2010.

Hey…just ‘cos we’re married with kids doesn’t mean we’re totally blind, ya know! As a friend had said, "You can peruse the menu, dear, just make sure you eat at home!"

This Weekend – Thai Fest At The Thai Embassy

The yearly Thai Fest at the Thai Embassy on Orchard is here again from now until 23 May, Sunday. This time they’ve done it up in a more organized set up, with around 80 stalls of jewellery, food, household items, toiletries and clothes in neater sections. Madam pottered over there for a look see, and my conclusion is, if you’re in the vicinity, it’s worth popping in, but not if you’re making a special trip down.

What to buy there? My picks nice glass blown jewelry from Lailan Décor. I like the cocktail rings ($15) in all sorts of colours in a bulbous glass bauble. Good to know, bulk orders are priced at $2.80 for a minimum order of 100 pieces.

Beautiful glass pens ($30 per set) from Honey Glass. I tried it and they write very smoothly using ordinary fountain pen ink…This makes a great present ‘cos it’s so unique. Each pen is made from a single handblown glass.

The solid perfume ($20) and luffa embedded soap from another stall called Natural Homemade….

And gorgeous cocktail jewellery by Anada. The pictures didn’t turn out very well I’m afraid, but the rings are absolutely beautiful, including gold plated silver pieces, chunky semi precious stones, and sleek streamlined yet bold pieces from matte gold and silver to pieces with wood, and stones.
Definitely worth dropping in on over the weekend. Bring cash! Until 23 May, Sunday.

This Weekend - Screening Room - Coco Before Chanel with Dinner

If you have nothing planned this weekend, here's something perfect for a night out with the girls. Catch the movie ‘Coco Before Chanel’ at The Screening Room (today and tomorrow – 26 & 27 March), and get treated to a cosy evening at a dinner-theatre setting.

This Weekend – Wine Sale

Time to stock up on Christmas wines! The Top Wines Festive Sale is back, and I’m heading over to pick up some good buys….and this time, they’ve shifted to my neck of the woods….which means a 5 minute drive rather than the 25 minute I used to make! Mind you, they’re not cheap plonk, but mostly good wines made affordable (expect most of the wines fall into the $25 - $40 range). For me, the higlight include plenty of sparkling reds (which a friend calls ‘Black Champagne’ – there’s a nice ring to it), champers, and lots of Italian wines, including my favourite dessert Zaccagnini's Plaisir. Also lots of refreshing whites for the season. The sale is on this weekend only – 5-6 December.

Cultural Sunday For the Kids

The school hols have just started, and if you don’t know what to do with the little ones, bring them over to the Asian Civilisations Museum this Sunday for an afternoon of activities dinky little do where they live out the life of old world explorers. This Weekend – Stargazing and Silky Wishes

STAR GAZING!

Pack your night cream, portable pillows, flask of coffee and grab this once in a lifetime chance to witness a meteor storm. The Leonids Meteor Shower is definitely an overnight event for the whole family happening sometime between 8pm and 5am on 17 to 18 November (overnight) at the Singapore Science Centre.

The Science Centre and TASOS are celebrating the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009 with a big bang.  The stars of the show are forecasted to be a half meteor storm that will happen at 5am. Astronomers have predicted that the annual Leonids might put up the most dramatic light show not seen in recent years as the earth passes close to the centre of the comet’s debris trail laid down in 1466. The ideal locations for viewing are in Asia* and North America. 

Expect staged performances by Kenji Williams, an audio visual art performer. Off stage, visitors will be entertained by the Science Buskers. For astronomy buffs, an accompanying meteorite exhibition, a talk by TASOS, on-site telescope viewing of the planet Jupiter and inflatable planetarium tours for children will also be held.

*Please note that viewing and extent of the Leonids storm is subject to location and clear skies. Neither the Science Centre nor TASOS or other joint organisers can be held responsible in the event that the view of the Leonids is poor.

The celebrity postcards are available for sale via a silent auction, with all proceeds going to Beautiful People. Visitors are also invited to play and experiment with different ways of wearing Hermès silk at the studio. Pick up some scarf tying tips from the team of stylists and have your photo taken either in the indoor studio or out on the open air upper deck, with Orchard Road as a backdrop. This Weekend – 'A Different Journey' with Russel Wong

Walk ‘A Different Journey’ with photographer Russel Wong this coming weekend from 6 November to 29 November.

Best known for his celebrity portraits and as the photographer to the stars, this exhibition-sale will instead show a very different side to Russel’s eye, sensitivity and unique imagination.

In this new exhibition, there will be no portraits of Jackie Chan, no Aishwarya Rai and not even his muse, Joan Chen. Instead, expect to see early morning views of Huangshan or Yangshou, the rising mist as it spreads over the Li Jiang River just as the fishermen set out on their arduous day, or simply find yourself intertwined in a bamboo forest in Kyoto.

Like a classical Chinese ink painter, the subtleties of light and shadow and his mastery of composition are beautifully reflected in this collection of 35 specially selected landscapes in black and white.

These stunning photographs of landscapes and nature taken and collected over the last 9 years are from his travels to Sri Lanka, Siem Reap, Italy, France, China and Japan. This is the very first time that they have gone on exhibit and this is Russel’s first major exhibition-sale since 2005.

This Weekend – Beauty Still Prevails

This Weekend - New Wines and Your Favourite Brit Labels

Wine for Asia - Lotsa Libation!
We know - it's a campy picture, but behind these ladies is a vast show of grape juice done the way we like it.....WINE!!

Totter down to Wine For Asia 2009, the annual wine and spirits show, at Suntec City from tomorrow till Saturday (22-24 Oct) for copious quantities of heavenly libation. You can to see, feel and taste thousands of wines and spirits from California, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and South America.

A couple of highlights - a Spirits Pavilion where you can check out new cocktails and watch international mixologists (that’s what they call bartenders in the cool circles!) work their magic. This is the only live, touring High School Musical experience featuring the songs, dances, and team-spirited fun inspired by all three hit movies! This show apparently combines all the best songs and dances from all three High School Musical movies into one dynamic show. Expect opportunities to dance on stage with Troy and Gabriella.

Among the live celebration of songs are “We’re All in This Together” from “High School Musical,” “Fabulous” from “High School Musical 2,” and “Can I Have This Dance” from High School Musical 3: Senior Year.

The Terry Fox Run or Run For Hope 2009, in support of the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS)  and its research activities is probably Singapore's most established non-competitive charity running event here. 

Annually organised by The Regent and Four Seasons Hotels in Singapore, the Run takes place on: 

• Sunday, 22^nd November 2009
• From 7:00am
• Start point: Angsana Green at East Coast Park (Beside East Coast Lagoon food village, Carpark E2)
• With a choice of 2 routes for participants – 4km (Flag-off at 8:00am) & 10km (Flag-off at 7:45am)
