Binge – Chinese New Year Takeaways, Poon Choy and the Return of the Rabbit

Szechuan Court's Lucky Bunny Yu Sheng - too cute to eat!

Are we frantically working out ahead of the Lunar New Year feast-fest? I am, but perhaps to little avail, and I see myself hurtling into a whirl of intensive eating, snacking and drinking come 2 Feb when the Reunion Dinner is served, marking the Chinese New Year, and the Return of the Rabbit.

This year has added significance for me ‘cos my daughter has reached her first full cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Yup, she’s a bunny baby, and it’s been 12 years since I had her. So on that note, I am quite prepared to celebrate a little harder this Chinese New Year with even more goodies.

At the same time, the onslaught of CNY always presents the issue of getting all the CNY gifts – or ‘nian huo’ – for family and friends, particularly aunties. Every year, being the filial niece, I potter out to pick up all manner of traditional food gifts which I think the aunts would appreciate – dried longans, bak kwa, dried scallops, eight treasure tea, dried shitake mushrooms, waxed meats…yes, the usual traditional items. But that is pretty time consuming and this year, I've decided to make life easier and buy each a single gift from the swanky takeaway counters and be done with it.

Don't you just wanna take them dinky things home?
These lucky lavender koi nian gao are from Szechuan Court, too.

And while we’re talking about making life easier, I have finally seen the light and appreciate poon choy. My rather cynical mother had commented before that this huge vat packed tightly with braised foods seemed a little vulgar and crude and it never featured at her table. But when I ate it not too long ago, it dawned on me – okay, rather belatedly, but the scales took time to fall from my eyes – that cooked well, it is very indulgent in its richness. All you really need was one huge vat to feed a dozen hungry guests, add in a large yu sheng for fortune and fibre, a nice nian gao for dessert and you have all the essentials for a CNY feast.

So on that varied and wandering note, here’s what caught my eye for CNY goodies around town.

Szechuan Court's poon choy with a bunny that's not that lucky. It just got eaten!

The Fairmont Singapore can always be trusted to dish out novel yu sheng dishes. This year, its ‘Lucky Rabbit’ yu sheng (top) is, like my daughter said, too cute to eat. The white radish forms the shape of a bunny, and features beetroot and pomegranate. If you can stomach eating the luckiest animal in the zodiac, Szechuan Court is serving up a Spicy Sichuan Soup Pot with 18 Treasures and rabbit meat (from $198; above). Apart from eating the golden goose – or shall I say, the golden rabbit – the dish also serves up house-smoked abalone, beef tendon, fish belly, fish fillets, fish maw, fish cartilage, shredded fish lips, dried scallops, clam topshell, oysters, meatballs. I say, give me everything, just hold the bunny. If you want something really pretty for a gift, pick up their lavender-infused nian gao ($8 each) which also sports a sprinkling of coconut. See the lovely fishes? Aren't they just irresistible?!

Chef Hiew's unusual take on nian gao was inspired by a favourite
snack of one of China's famous Sung sisters.

If I were having the Reunion Dinner out, I’d make a reservation at Mandarin Oriental Singapore’s Cherry Garden. The classy restaurant is always so refined and its relatively small capacity keeps it intimate and elegant. Plus of course, the fact that it’s Chinese chef Hiew Gun Khong is very creative and talented. On the CNY menus, must have’s are the yu sheng with salmon and crispy fish skin, wok-fried spare ribs with mandarin orange and chocolate sauce, mini Buddha Jumps Over the Wall with cordyceps, and whole five-head abalone in traditional style, and end with snowskin nian gao dumplings with macadamia nut and coconut crumbs or the black glutinous rice with coconut crunch ice and mango.

Cherry Garden's so refined Treasure Pot isn't too expensive, surprisingly!

Set menus for a minimum of two persons begin at $118 per person, while set menus for a minimum of four persons are priced from $88 per pax – pretty good value compared to prices at fine western restaurants. Our internal sources reveal that many buy their reunion dinner in its entirety here, and bring it home. If you’re not planning to cook, make an order for the Cherry Garden Treasure Pot (S$238) featuring 13 ingredients, and the casserole-cooked jasmine rice with waxed meat and sausages (S$98). An intriguing gift is the Royal Steamed Red Bean and Nian Gao Layer Cake (S$26), Chef Hiew’s version of a favourite dessert of one of China’s famous Sung sisters.

How cool and stylish can 'nian-huo' get?
This gold and black seasame nian gao from Mandarin Court
is as gorgeous as it is yummilicious.

You’ll find some unusual nian gao at Mandarin Orchard’s Chinese restaurant Mandarin Court this year, in particular Chef Sunny Kong’s brow-raising bak kwa nian gao ($38,80) which is an odd combination of sweet and savoury, and which proved a hit and miss. You either like it or loathe it. What was really good though in looks and taste were the black sesame nian gao (above), a controversial black, smooth confection with gold flakes and rich with the flavour of nutty black sesame, and the fragrant green tea and osmanthus nian gao ($33), all sweet and delicate.

The new chef has also rolled out a really fabulous poon choy. For $338, you get the Fortune Pot (left)  packed with 20 delectably braised ‘treasures’ – fish maw, baby abalone, sea cucumber, prawns, clams, goose web, roast duck, etc. At $468, you get a poon choy with five-head abalone. Both serve up to 8 people and all these items are available for takeaway too.

Binge - Take Home Christmas

Let’s cut to the chase, girls. Here are more suggestions on what to bring home for your Christmas party so you don’t have to get your hands dirty with the cooking. The only thing we’d add is, buy items you can’t make at home easily so you stretch your money’s worth!

Grand Hyatt Singapore
Here’s one place you can always really trust to fork out quality food and great presentation, no matter what you pick from the menu, whether it is a main or dessert - that’s been my experience with this hotel for the last 20 years of my food writing and personal eating. I bought a fig tart for a Christmas party from here almost 10 years ago and people are still talking about it. So what’s available here this year? Whole Christmas Tom Turkey with Giblet Gravy and Cranberry Chutney ($145/ 5kg), whole spit-roasted duckling ($68), roasted goose ($212), salmon fillet baked in brioche with dill and sour cream sauce ($126/1.5 kg). For sweets, take the macaroon log cake with crispy lindt chocolate mousse ($64), and panettone with rum-marinated fruit ($32). Or how about a super indulgent box of 99 chocolate pralines ($198)?

Tel: 6734 6731

Mandarin Orchard
Did you know the original Christmas bird was actually the goose? So don’t let the turkeys get you down if you’re no fan of the gobbler. How about Roasted Kurobuta Pork Rack ($158/1.5 kg) for your festive meat instead? Or Rosemary Roasted Sakura Chicken (1.5kg, $88 nett) with chestnut and green apple stuffing, Lamb Leg with Dried Fruits and Nuts ($168/2.5 kg), or a light Salmon and Scallop Mille-feuille (1.5kg, $150 nett), an impressive dish of salmon layered with scallop mousse and topped with a puff pastry crust? And for dessert, try the Green Tea and Hokkaido Azuki Yule Log or Chocolate Hazelnut Raspberry Yule Log ($65/1 kg).
From now til 1 January 2011

Royal Plaza on Scotts
Go a little French with Galette des Rois, or Twelfth Night Cake, which follows a popular French tradition. Served only on the day of Epiphany (or 12 days after Christmas), it’s a confection of almond frangipane paste, sandwiched between layers of puff pastry. Hidden inside is a little token, and whoever gets the slice with this little prize gets to be the King or Queen. He or she wears the gold paper crown that comes with the cake and will host the Galette des Rois the following year. How cool is that? It’s not often seen here in Singapore, but you can get it at Gourmet Carousel from 1 to 6 January 2011 at $52. Meanwhile, check out Carousel’s Christmas sweets like their macaroons, and fantastical cakes in the form of mushrooms and caterpillars. They’re bound to please the kids.

Tel: 6589 7788 or gourmet@royalplaza.com.sg

Coriander Leaf
Get a different spin on Christmas with Coriander Leaf’s goodies. We especially like their desserts –high on uniqueness and value too: Valrhona Chocolate Tartlets (3 dozen @ $84+), Mini Fig Tartlets (3 dozen @ $84+), Fruit Cake with liquor (450gms @ $28+) and Cranberry and Ginger Pudding 450gms @ $32+. While we’re at it, their customized hampers are also perfect for gifting. Give them a budget starting from $35 and Samia will sort it out for you with goodies like homemade chutneys & condiments, cookies, confection and spice mixes. Of these, make sure you get her fabulous Coriander Pesto. There’s also kebsa spice and sumac spice mixes, cumin crisps, almond pralines and flavoured helvas.

De Ste
Here’s the shop the go to when you are superbly artistic confections. Their chocolate Christmas tree (left) is just to die for, so gorgeous you don’t need a real Christmas tree. See the pretty picture? Enough said.

Saint Pierre
So stylish it hurts hostesses must be different, so pick up your party pack from Saint Pierre – foie gras terrine, lobster bisque, 200-day aged angus beef, 72-hour braised beef short rib and Scottish salmon. For sweets, how about a date and raisin pudding or their signature flourless chocolate cake? Available until 20 Dec only.

Binge - Mooncake Madness and Chang Er Ratings Part 1

We are happily inundated by a deluge of mooncake news this year. So cutting to the yolk of the matter, when it’s time to seek out our inner Chang Er, detox on Chinese tea and nibble on mooncakes, here’s the sea of choices you have….SimplyFab gives you a quick run-down according to our tongue-in-cheek lunar ratings based on the following categories:

Chang Er’s Faves: Traditional or down-to-earth flavours that we think would be widely enjoyed.
Lunar Lights: Creative, unusual, yet with wide appeal
Off Into Orbit: So wild it’s orbiting round the moon. Watch Chang Er fly after it!

Fairmont Hotel (13 August to 22 September)
Chang Er’s Faves: The Baked Mooncake with Roasted Pine Nuts in White Lotus Paste is one of the nicest traditional baked mooncakes from hotels this year. Soft lotus paste with a decent bite, in a thin baked skin. You can’t go wrong with this. ($48 per box of 4)
Lunar Lights: The Mini-Snow Skin Organic Muesli Chocolate Mooncake ($53 box) comprising chocolate swirl sprinkled with muesli and wrapped in a chocolate shell (new this year); Baked Peach-shaped Single Yolk & Macadamia Nuts in White Lotus Paste; and their bestseller, Champagne Truffle & Chocolate Ganache in snow skin.
Off Into Orbit: Okay, this isn’t really round the moon, but it’s levitating a little off the ground. The Golden ‘Qi’ Mooncake, a new baked creation by Chef Mandy Yeo made with Chuan Xiong, Wolfberry & Fig in White Lotus Paste….If we had to give this to someone, it’ll be to an ancient family member or a Naturopath we like.

Trade in your old unused mooncake box and get $10 off your mooncake purchase to support the environment.
Contact: Mooncake Hotline at  6338 8785

Mandarin Orchard (16 August to 22 September)
Chang Er’s Faves: A really grand boxed presentation of a dragon and phoenix each made from five assorted mooncakes, reflecting yin (phoenix) and yang (dragon). Great taukays and their embellished wives will definitely like! The five assorted baked mooncakes that make up the Mandarin Fortune Dragon ($108) include the traditional Baked Mooncake with Double Yolks and single yolk with White Lotus Paste, Macadamia Nuts and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste and Baked Mooncake with Ginseng, Wolfberries and White Lotus Paste for vitality, performance and power!
Lunar Lights: The Mandarin Fortune Phoenix ($118) falls into this category for its rather unusual make up. Of the five bing pi mooncakes in this box set, we like the Osmanthus and Red Bean Paste, Green Tea Mooncake, Oolong Tea Mooncake but are a tad concerned about the Ginseng Mooncake. Is it a little bitter? I was never was a fan of ginseng…Bought as a pair, the “long and fong”. Out of the box (literally!), there’s also the Mini Snow Skin Green Tea and Melon Seeds Mooncake ($46.80 for a box of 8) which sounds really cool with…err…green tea.
Off Into Orbit: Mandarin Orchard has always been pretty restrained, so nothing’s blasting off to the moon from here this year. Generally tried and true flavours rule and that’s perfectly okay to me.

Contact: Mooncake Deli Counter at  6831 6320/ 6285

Marina Mandarin (24 August to 22 September)
Chang Er’s Faves: Baked mooncake with Cashew Nuts in White Lotus Paste ($44.80++ for a box of 4) and baked mooncake with Double Yoke in White Lotus Paste ($48.80++ for a box of 4) both with low sugar content!
Lunar Lights: Mini Snowskin Mooncake with “Han Tian” Rose Paste and Champagne Chocolate ($48.80++ for a box of 8/ pictured) is a blend of rich champagne chocolate with “Han Tian” rose paste, or Mini Snow-skin Mooncake with Green Tea Paste with Chestnuts. These two are Chinese Master Chef Aw Yeong Kin’s new creations this year. We think these two would work nicely but are not so sure about the next two….
Off Into Orbit: Also new this year are his mini Snow-skin Mooncake with Mixed Berries and Whisky Chocolate ($48.80++ for a box of 8) tangy with wild berries and smooth whisky chocolate, and Mini Snowskin Mooncake with Green Apple Paste and Macadamia Nuts ($48.80++ for a box of 8 pieces).

If you want variety, pick up the Selection of Mini Snow Skin Mooncakes ($50.80++) containing two pieces each of the four new snowskin flavours.
Contact: Peach Blossoms at 6845 1118 or email peachblossoms@meritus-hotels.com

Goodwood Park Hotel (10 August to 22 September)
Chang Er’s Faves: Assorted Baked Combo ($48), containing a piece each of Lotus Seed Paste with Melon Seeds, Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolks, White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolks and Assorted Nuts with Ham. Can’t go wrong with that.
Lunar Lights: Favourites back by popular demand since it was launched in 2008, the Mango with Pomelo in Snowskin Mooncake comprises mango puree with mango cubes and pomelo sac. ($24 for two pieces; S$42 for four). Then there’s also D24 Durian Paste in Snowskin Mooncake and Cempedak Paste in Snowskin Mooncake, also proven concoctions making a return appearance. (S$28 for two; $50 for four)
Off Into Orbit: The Almond Beancurd with Longan Giant Snowskin Mooncake ($11 per piece) commemorates the hotel’s 110th anniversary. At 12 cm in diameter, it contains almond beancurd paste with longan bits, presented in a elegant gold silk drawstring pouch. Another new thing is the Apple Caramel Snowskin Mooncake with fresh and caramelised green apple amid green apple puree. Hmmm……
Contact: Mooncake Call Centre at (65) 6730 1867 / 1868

Ritz Carlton Millenia (23 August to 22 September)
Chang Er’s Faves: You really can’t go wrong with traditional basics. We like Ritz Carlton’s refreshing yolkless option of a combination package - two large and six mini baked mooncakes without a yolk in sight! ($58.50)
Lunar Lights: Chef Fok Kai Yee has rolled out a new mini bing pi jujube paste with walnut mooncake where the smoky flavour of the jujube filling complements the crunchy walnut bits. For the kids, the chocolate mooncake and mini chocolate mooncake should be a hit.
Off Into Orbit: Not much in this category, except perhaps mini bing pi lycheetini mooncake. We like our lychee martinis, but we’re really not sure if it works as a mooncake. What will Chang Er think?
Contact: Summer Pavilion at 6434 5286

Grand Hyatt Singapore (25 August to 22 September)
Chang Er’s Faves: This hotel can always be trusted for good pastries and sweet stuff for takeaways. Plus they’ve always been known for the creative streak. This year, we like their Chinese Chess Set Traditional Mooncakes ($78) made of little bite sized mooncakes – first you play Chinese chess, then you eat up your opponent’s pieces. How cool is that?
Lunar Lights: It’s usually the bing pi mooncakes that hide the surprises. At Hyatt, the mini Champagne Truffle mooncake and Black Sesame Yuzu Truffle are new this year and falls into our new and nice category. ($55 per box of 8)
Off Into Orbit: Blasting to space is the new Sakura Flower Cherry Truffle ($55 per 8) with Lindt white couverture chocolate. Poetic, but we’d rather stay on the ground.
Contact: 6887 5492 or e-mail us at mezza9.sg@hyatt.com

Four Seasons Singapore
Chang Er’s Faves: Apart from the traditional baked mooncakes that is standard everywhere, the Baked Mooncake with Pandan and Single Yolk ($50.00) is becoming a pretty classic flavour too.
Lunar Lights: Here’s something pretty cute – the new Yin-Yang mooncake ($55 per box)comprising black sesame and water chestnut pastes wrapped in traditional baked pastry. That should please grandma.
Off Into Orbit: If you’re into boosting fertility and feminine vitality, I hear you need to load up on gong-quai! And aren’t you in luck – the hotel has launched its new signature creation which incorporates this very wonder herb! The Dong Quai mooncake with single yolk costs $55

We've got a few more to come....so keep an eye out for more lunar news.

Binge - Eat Up For Singapore! National Day Deals and Meals

It’s National Day round the corner, and I’m heading off next Saturday to catch of glimpse of the fireworks! Time to bring out the red and white t-shirt and shorts ensemble, get the kid a Giordano national day T-shirt and wave the little plastic flag from the hotel room balcony! Such excitement! And of course, it’s a perfect excuse to imbibe in some bubbly along the way. After all, despite the recent floods, the education system that strangles all notions of childhood, and the roller coaster ride at Universal Studios that refuses to start, Singapore is still a good place to live.

There’s lots of eating to in celebration of the 45th National Day. Binge - World Cup Viewing - Let The Man Have Some Fun

I have been hearing it from the hubs how people are boycotting buying the FIFA World Cup viewing channels. I can’t say I have been following the debate, but I know that plenty of guys are out there are on the prowl for a place to go to watch the football games. So I thought let’s do the boys a favour and give them a few good listings to put them out of their misery. Here goes, darlings…

For laid-back luxe, allow the man and his burping boys to head to Fairmont Singapore where they are offering party deals and viewing at Prego (7pm and 10pm) and later at the INK Club Bar at 2.30am. Pizza and beer make up the munchies at $50 for 3 beers and a pizza for two; 6 beers and 2 pizzas ($100) for a group of 4 and 10 beers and 3 pizzas ($150) for a party of 6. Stella Artois at $12 per order (U.P. $14). You pay a little extra but for respectable surrounds, and it sure beats heading to Bou Bou Midnite Bar round the corner to hang out with karaoke hostesses!

Tel: 6431 6156 or email: dining.singapore@fairmont.com for reservations at Prego or INK Club Bar

Mandarin Orchard is upping up the party mood at Bar on 5, which is not just screening the matches from 11 June to 11 July, it’s also rolled out menus to match (no pun intended!). The Beers of the World menu offers Erdinger White Wheat, Kilkenny, Boddingtons Ale, Kirin Beer, Tetley’s English Ale etc mostly at $15 each to drink according to his favourite teams, and match it with nibbles from the Chef’s World Soccer Snacks menu featuring picks from countries which are represented in the world cup. How about South Africa’s lamb peri peri, England’s English codfish and chips, Brazil’s fried semolina cheese ball and Spain’s Croquetas de Jamon. These snack are all priced at a sizzling $10++ each. What’s more, if he comes dressed in his favourite national jersey, he’ll get 20% off food & beverages at any of the hotel’s F&B outlets.

Tel: 6831 6288 or email dine.orchard@meritus-hotels.com for reservations

We like what’s happening at Oriole Café and Bar (no pretty pics at the mo, but we'll get it soon!) at the Pan Pacific Serviced Suites. Not only are they screening most (not all though) matches live on their ‘huge indoor screen’, they’ve also concocted new bar food and drinkies to match the match. Drinks first: quench up on campy cocktails by the carafe ($38++), like ‘Yellow Card’ made of citron vodka, lime sorbet and prosecco, ‘Ori Ole’ made with gin, lime juice, ginger beer and mint leaves and ‘Sunny Boy’ – gin, limoncello, raspberry puree, fresh lemon juice and soda. Bar food sounds equally cheesy, like ‘The Header’, a spicy chicken hotdog ($12) with onion & tomato relish, ‘Golden Goalie’ comprising cheesy beef meatballs ($12) with tomato sauce and melted cheese, as well as the ‘Fowl Play’, crispy fried chicken bites ($8). Listen up for the ‘Air Horn Alert’ too where bartenders will announce a special bar promotion whenever the air horn is sounded. For more macho libation, all bottled beers such as Asahi, San Miguel and Sol go for $20++ for three and all draught beers at $13++ per pint. Happy hour $6.50++ deals apply to house wine by the glass and draft beer by the pint (5pm to 8pm and 12am to 2am, from Sunday to Thursday). For the screening schedule, go to http://www.oriolecafe.wordpress.com/

96 Somerset Road, #01-01, Pan Pacific Serviced Suites

But it’s hard to beat what Resorts World Singapore is doing – which is turning the entire resort into a football viewing hotspot with 72 screens mounted across the vast property, making this the largest venue for watching football. At no cost to fans, the resort promises to air all 64 matches. Among the many places he can catch the action here, your man can drag his buddies to The Forum in the resort’s Basement 1, which will be turned into a match theatre with 300 seats and a giant six by five meter LED TV screen; all the 1300 hotel rooms, the Casino Royale Bar, Happy9, Feng Shui Inn, Maxims and Crockfords Club areas within the Resorts World Casino. The resort’s restaurants will be running World Cup promotions too - celeb chef Scott Webster’s Osia is rooting for Australia with a World Cup Bucket for five bottles of Little Creatures Beer at $45.00++; Palio will be supporting Italy with Moretti beer going for $8.00++; Fiesta and Festive Lounge will cheering for Brazil with Bottled Nova Schin beer at S$8.00++; Starz Restaurant for USA with Budweiser beer at S$8.00++.

Tel: 6577 8888 or visit www.rwsentosa.com for details
Yes, it’s all a bit cheesey we know, and not quite our SimplyFab style. …but we’re humouring the guys and letting them have their fun too…and that’s being pretty fabulicious of us! All these deals run from 11 June to 11 July when the guys turn back to being relatively normal again!

Binge – Drinky-Poo’s at $5, Girls!

Where to go for our lychee martinis and cosmos? Mandarin Orchard’s new Bar on 5 is rolling out a super sweet deal on cocktails from today. How sweet is it? How about $5 a pop for all martinis using Russian Standard Vodka? According to our sources, faves at the bar are the Lycheetini, Peach Martini and Cosmopolitan. But if you’re in for a bit of James Bonding, she says the Classic Martini and Dry Martini are good too.

If you’re heaving the hubs, the bar’s got 1-for-1 deals for beers (average price $12++) and spirits (average price $16++) as well as wine ($14++). Finally for a bit of bubbly, a bottle of Moёt & Chandon goes for $99++ all day!
